“Alice in Borderland,” an original Netflix series, has become Netflix’s most-watched Japanese live-action title worldwide. Season 1, released on December 10, 2020, ranked in the top 10 in 70 countries. Season 2, released on December 22, 2022, made the top 10 in 90 countries and claimed the No.1 spot in 17 countries and regions, marking a historic milestone.
One day, Ryohei Arisu and Yuzuha Usagi were suddenly thrown into the “Borderlands,” where they were forced to participate in deadly “games” that put their lives on the line. Season 1 depicted young people confronting the meaning of life as they fought to survive through a series of brutal games. Season 2 took the story further into even more challenging Next Stage, where the mysteries behind the Borderlands were gradually uncovered. It was revealed that Arisu and the others had been hovering between life and death as their hearts temporarily stopped after a catastrophic incident. During that time, those who failed the games passed on to the afterlife, while those who cleared them all were allowed to return to the real world. But the games were not truly over.
Four years have passed since their return. Arisu and Usagi are now married, enjoying peaceful days together. However, the Joker card shown in the final scene of Season 2 leads Usagi once again into the Borderlands. To bring her back, Arisu steps into the Borderlands once more, determined to take on the deadly games.
Released globally in September 2025 across more than 190 countries, Season 3 (six episodes total) presents an original story built upon the universe firmly established in the previous two seasons. Filming began in late 2023. It features returning leads Kento Yamazaki as Arisu and Tao Tsuchiya as Usagi, and they are joined by powerful new cast including Koji Ohkura, Risa Sudou, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Tina Tamashiro, Kotaro Daigo, Hyunri, Sakura Kiryu, Yugo Mikawa, Joey Iwanaga, Akana Ikeda, and Kento Kaku. Returning from previous seasons are Hayato Isomura, Ayaka Miyoshi, and Katsuya Maiguma, whose characters now serve as crucial links between the real world and the Borderlands.
Shinsuke Sato continues as director following the previous two seasons. While producing Season 2, director Sato began crafting new concepts inspired by fragments never explored in the original manga, particularly Usagi’s untold story and the mystery behind the Joker.
The deadly games—the very identify of “Alice in Borderland”—range from those adapted from the original manga (such as Sacred Fortunes), to reimagined versions (such as Runway Train), and entirely new ones designed exclusively for this new chapter. Testing various abilities such as intelligence, strength, and teamwork, the uniqueness and completeness of these merciless and sometimes unreasonable games, and their affinity with the story elevate the series to its most sophisticated level yet.
Post-production alone took over a year to complete. From sequences where 100 million flaming arrows rain down upon players, to a destructive climax where Tokyo collapses under a massive flood, the visuals showcase the seamless fusion of art design, VFX, and cinematography, refined and perfected in the series’ production.
Having once lived through a new stage of life together, Arisu and Usagi now return to the Borderlands, each guided by their own reasons, to face the games of the new Joker stage. Can Arisu bring Usagi back to the real world? What lies beyond clearing the games? And what actually is the Joker? On September 25, 2025, the world will witness the final stage of “Alice in Borderland” that no one has ever known!
